PEER Advocate Position Description
Nature of Work:
Under supervision, performs various duties concerned with the provision of supportive services to the non-institutionalized elderly. Does related work as required.
Examples of Duties:
Upon assignment, will listen, identify problem/need, and identify community resources to relieve the problem. Make appropriate referral and/or contact appropriate agencies for direct services for the client. Provide follow-up to assure services are received and are adequate. May counsel client to encourage acceptance of services and/or help the individual find alternatives.
Requirements of Work:
Knowledge of local community resources, state and federal programs, and of hospital and community relationships; knowledge of the normal aging process, mental health problems/personality disorders versus disease. Ability to listen well; discern fact from fiction, clarify problems/issues, and identify needs. Ability to develop understanding of another persons worldview; tolerate different value systems; express ones self clearly, concisely, orally, and in writing; completion of training sessions.
