GLUCOSE (DIABETES) SCREENING |

The blood glucose test is ordered to measure the amount of glucose in the blood at
the time of sample collection. It is used to detect both hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia
and to help diagnose diabetes.

Symptoms of diabetes or hyperglycermia:
- Increased thirst
- Increased urination
- Fatigue
- Blurred vision
- Slow healing infections
|
Symptoms of hypoglycemia:
- Sweating
- Hunger
- Trembling
- Anxiety
- Confusion
- Blurred Vision
|
The Glucose Test:
- You should have nothing to eat or drink except water for at least 8 hours, so having the blood test taken early in the morning is best.
- After filling out a form, the patient is taken back to the laboratory for the blood test.
- The blood test consists of a finger stick.
- The patient waits while the test is ran which is only 1-2 minutes.
- The results are written down and explained to the patient.

Test Results-Fasting Blood Glucose:
- From 70 to 99 mg/dL ------- Normal glucose tolerance
- From 100 to 125 mg/dL ----- Impaired fasting glucose
- 126 mg/dL and above ------- Diabetes
