The NE Polk County Beltway is a new traffic corridor around the north
side of the metro area, much like the US 65/IA5 bypass extending around
the south side of the metro. Several metro area communities, including
the cities of Alleman, Ankeny, Altoona, Bondurant, Elkhart, Des Moines
and Polk City, as well as Polk County, have identified balanced growth
in the Metro area as a critical element in maintaining the quality of
life that our residents currently enjoy. These communities have formed
the Beltway Coalition and believe the NE Beltway is an important part
of securing this balanced growth goal and are working together to
develop this project.

The NE Beltway Feasibility Study is complete. The study found that traffic
levels in Polk County and the metro area will continue to increase at a rapid
pace and will surpass the capacity of the existing interstate roadways within
the next 25 years. Because of this rapid growth, and the time required to
develop and ultimately construct a new roadway, the Beltway Coalition believes
the development of the proposed NE Beltway must continue forward.
Phase 2 of the NE Beltway Study is underway and includes preparation of an
Environmental Impact Statement on the East Segment with a cost of approximately
$637,500. The Beltway coalition has entered into a 28E Agreement to cover the
costs of this study, which includes $510,000 in Federal High Priority project
funding assistance.
