NW 100th Street Interchange on I-35/80
The proposed NW 100th St. Interchange is located between the northeast and
southwest I-35 and I-80 System Interchange. NW 100th Street is an integral
part of the local road network and is one of the original “one mile grid”
streets that serve the area. A 28E Agreement between Polk County and the
cities of Urbandale, Grimes and Johnston provided for a preliminary evaluation
of immediate and long term transportation improvements.
The area surrounding the proposed project is experiencing rapid residential
and commercial development. This new interchange will provide needed access
to this fast growing portion of the metropolitan area and allow the roadway
system that supports NW 100th Street to balance the projected traffic volumes
with the capacity. The existing interchanges one-mile on either side of NW
100th Street must carry these trips today, which are already beginning to show
congestion. Interstate 35/80 is being programmed for the addition of one more
lane in each direction (lanes 7 and 8) in the 2020 – 2030 phase of the Des
Moines Area MPO 2030 Long Range Transportation Plan. This demand will create
greater congestion which can be partially alleviated by this project.
The Interchange Justification Report and Environmental Assessment are expected
to be completed in 2006, with design and right-of-way acquisition in 2007 and
construction in 2008. Total cost of the project is estimated at $21.5 million.
