First Chief Deputy Vic Munoz, a veteran of the Sheriff’s Office
serving since 1978, has extensive knowledge and experience in all areas of the Sheriff’s
Office and is a 2008 graduate of the FBI National Academy. The First Chief Deputy
assists the Sheriff with the responsibility for the day-to-day internal operations
of the Sheriff’s Office. Chief Deputy Munoz has demonstrated a strong commitment
to public safety and has facilitated cooperative efforts with law enforcement leaders
and government officials at the local, state and federal levels.
The Administration Division provides a variety of management and support services
for the entire Sheriff’s Office. Examples of these services include:

Training Academy
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office and the Des Moines Police Department’s consolidation
of services in the area of training increased the efficient delivery of essential
training. The Academy is staffed by employees from the Sheriff’s Office and the
Des Moines Police Department.
Citizens Academy
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office and the Des Moines Police Department host a Joint
Citizens Academy. The Citizens Academy is designed to promote a better understanding
of law enforcement through education. A combination of classroom and hands-on exercises
give participants exposure to all aspects of law enforcement from traffic stops
to Court appearances.
