Steven Stanley pled guilty to Failure to Comply with the Sex Offender Registry. He was sentenced to serve thirty days in the Polk County Jail.
George Vantrece appeared in court and plead guilty to the charge of Assault Causing Serious Injury, a class D forcible felony, and was sentenced to five years imprisonment. This case arose on January 19, 2008, when George Vantrece assaulted Julie Griffin while she was sitting in the back seat of a parked car. The defendant assaulted Julie Griffin by punching her in the face causing serious injury.
David Ortiz and Jose Cordova-Vasquez pled guilty and were sentenced before Judge Carla Schemmel. Both defendant’s plead guilty to Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver as alleged in Count I: Cocaine, in violation of Iowa Code Section, 124.401(1)(c)(2)(b), a Class C Felony and Count III: Marijuana, in violation of Iowa Code Section 124.401(1)(d), a Class D Felony. The defendant’s received a suspended sentence and probation. However, the defendant’s shall remain in custody pending deportation proceedings by the Federal Government. Both defendant’s were prosecuted by the Drug and Gang Bureau.

Jess Murillo appeared for sentencing on a Theft in the Second Degree charge. Defendant plead guilty on March 13, 2008 as a result of embezzling money from a former employer. The State argued for prison and defendant argued for a suspended sentence with probation. The defendant received a suspended sentence with probation – 5 years, $750.00 fine, restitution of just over $59,000.00.
On May 2, 2008, the defendant, Alonzo Roberson, plead guilty to the charges Theft in the Second Degree and Theft in the Third Degree pursuant to a plea bargain. The State agreed to dismiss the charge of Ongoing Criminal Conduct against the defendant for his agreement to plead guilty to the theft charges and agree to be sentenced to prison for seven years.
On June 10, 2008, the defendant appeared in open court for sentencing and was sentenced to five years on the Theft in the Second Degree charge and two years on the Theft in the Third Degree charge. Those sentences are to be served consecutively for a total of seven years.
This case arose in November of 2007, when the defendant, along with two other people, broke into several poker gaming machines in the Des Moines area. The gaming machines are maintained by various companies and placed in local taverns for amusement by their customers. The machines accept cash and dispense tickets to the winner. The tickets can be redeemed for food or drinks at the tavern. The defendant in this case had figured out a way to break into the machines and take the money. He stole approximately $2,500.00 from two machines at TR’s Sports Bar and approximately $922.00 from two machines located at the Cabaret Bar. The defendant also stole money from machines at other taverns in Des Moines and Fort Dodge.

William Johnston plead guilty to Conspiracy to Manufacture a Controlled Substance-Methamphetamine, as a lesser included offense of Count I of the Trial Information, in violation of Iowa Code Section 124.401(1)(c)(6), a Class C Felony. Johnston was immediately sentenced to 10 years in prison with a mandatory minimum 1/3 prior to being eligible for parole. Johnston sentence was run consecutive to his parole violation. Johnston was prosecuted by the Drug and Gang Bureau.
Kneal Hesse plead guilty to Child Endangerment (aggravated misdemeanor) to a PSI. Sentencing is set for July 18, 2008 at 9:30 a.m.
Rhonda Hawkins stipulated to a probation violation for failure to make payments. Defendant was continued on probation with a modified payment plan of $250.00 per month towards restitution.
Ryan Semple was sentenced on the charge of Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree. The defendant received a deferred judgment with a No Contact Order, restitution and anger management class.
