Flood Cleanup in Your Home

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed a booklet to provide guidance for homeowners and renters on how to clean up residential mold problems and how to prevent mold growth. Copies are available at Polk County Health Department, 1907 Carpenter Avenue in Des Moines or by going to (EPA booklet).

Public Health and Safety |
The Polk County Department of Health encourages the use of proper protective equipment when dealing with issues of water or sewage in your home or business. The use of rubber or hard-soled boots, rubber gloves, an N-95 disposable dust mask and a hard hat and glasses for overhead work.
If you cannot remember when you last received a tetanus shot, and have been walking through floodwater, cleaning up debris, or have scrapes or cuts, you are encouraged to get a tetanus shot as soon as possible. The Polk County Health Department will provide tetanus shots at no cost at 1907 Carpenter Avenue. Additional safety information is available at
