One of the functions of the Housing Services Division is to provide emergency repairs for eligible low income families throughout Polk County. Families with incomes equal to or below 150% of poverty may call the Polk County Emergency Repair Program to apply for assistance (515-875-5566).
If they are income eligible and their property is assessed for less than $95,000, they can receive a lifetime maximum repair benefit of $8,000, or 10% of the assessed value of their home, whichever is less.
Eligible families will be referred to Housing Services Division for the actual repair work. Housing Services will visit the home and make a determination of the repair need, secure contractor bids for the work, and ensure the work is satisfactorily completed. Families may apply for emergency assistance more than once, until the maximum limit has been reached.
