Deputy John Pohlman and K9 Sami
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office Canine Unit is a valuable resource for the agency. The Sheriff's Office has recently expanded the unit to three multi-purpose canines. Each team provides coverage for all unincorporated areas of the county in addition to our contract cities and available to other federal, state and local law enforcement agencies within and outside of Polk County upon request.
Each team consists of an on-duty Deputy Sheriff and their canine partner. Each team trains monthly with Canine Tactical in Chariton, Iowa. They are trained on building/area searches, tracking, detection and handler protection and certifies yearly. Canine Sami, Hanso, and Midas live with their handler and are members of their partner's families. The Canine Unit is also available for public service canine demonstrations upon request.
