Monday, June 25, 2012
Four vehicles were involved in a crash at approximately 5:15 p.m. tonight at the intersection of NW 26th Street and Oralabor Road, (Highway 415). Witnesses indicated that a Jeep towing a trailer with a motorcycle on it pulled in front of a pick-up which was also towing a trailer. The Jeep had been northbound on NW 26th Street and the pick-up was eastbound on Oralabor when they collided.
Upon impact, the trailer attached to each vehicle hit 2 other cars at the intersection. The Jeep and the pick-up’s trailer came to rest adjacent to each other and both caught fire. Shawn and Tonya Althaus, the only 2 occupants in the Jeep, managed to exit and both were transported to a local hospital by ground ambulance with injuries which did not appear to be life-threatening.
All drivers and passengers of the other 3 vehicles refused medical treatment at the scene. Those occupants include Anthony Moro, Nicole Thielges and a minor passenger, and Tonya Snodgrass and 2 teenage female passengers.
Units from Ankeny’s Police Department, Fire Department, and Fire Rescue, as well as Polk County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the crash. A portion of Oralabor was closed and traffic was rerouted for about 90 minutes until debris was cleared from the intersection.
The driver of the Jeep, Shawn Althaus, is expected to receive a citation for failing to yield upon entering a through highway.
