FATAL ACCIDENT ON NE 94TH AVENUE - June 12, 2013
Thursday, June 13, 2013
At approximately 8:40 p.m. Tuesday evening, June 11, 2013, Polk County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a fatal accident at 9133 NE 94th Avenue. Upon arrival, deputies found a deceased male, 53 year old Kendall Johnson of Rhodes, Iowa, inside his Chrysler LHS. Information from family indicated that he had left home early that same morning for work, as usual, but he had not been seen since then. Deputies reported seeing tire tracks through the south ditch just east of 9133, across part of a farm field, and into a nearby yard where the car came to rest at the base of a tree. The damage to the car seemed excessive given the path it had apparently taken.
Deputies expanded the accident scene about 40 yards to the east and located a deceased horse in the ditch on the south side of the road. Damage to the car, evidence on the roadway, injuries to the horse and its proximity to the accident scene leads preliminary investigators to believe that the horse had been in the roadway when it was hit by the Chrysler causing the vehicle to leave the road.
Crews assisting on scene include Polk County Sheriff’s Deputies, Altoona Fire Rescue, Bondurant Fire Rescue, staff from Polk County Medical Examiner’s Office, and Crow Tow. An autopsy will be performed later this week and a technical accident investigation will follow.
