ATM SKIMMING SCAM ALERT - PREVENTION TIPS Thu, 04 Jun 2015 09:16:54 GMT /sheriff/news-press-releases/atm-skimming-scam-alert-prevention-tips/ June 4, 2015

POLK COUNTY, Iowa

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office would like to advise the public of “ATM skimming” prevention tips.

Typically, ATM skimming thieves use two devices to capture your personal identification number (P.I.N.) and card data which can be hard to detect as these devices mimic the card slot on the ATM.  One device sits over the area where you swipe your card and reads the magnetic stripe containing your account number.  The second device, which captures your P.I.N., consists of a hidden camera on the ATM itself.

Below are three tips to prevent ATM Skimming Thefts:

1. Cover your PIN password with your hand

Hidden cameras are disguised so they can pick up your password.  By protecting it, ATM thieves can't access your account.

2. Observe the ATM

Look at an ATM to make sure the card slot is "legitimate and not tacked on."

3. Check bank balances frequently

Check your account activity frequently for unusual or unauthorized activity.

If you come across an ATM machine that you suspect of containing a “skimming device” immediately report it to your local law enforcement.

The photo below is courtesy of the FBI which illustrates how ATM skimming works:

IMPERSONATING AS A POLICE OFFICER - MAY 26, 2015 Thu, 28 May 2015 15:12:49 GMT /sheriff/news-press-releases/impersonating-as-a-police-officer-may-26-2015/ TRAFFIC STOP CONDUCTED BY A MAN WHO WAS BELIEVED TO BE IMPERSONATING HIMSELF AS A POLICE OFFICER

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a traffic stop that was conducted by a male who was believed to be impersonating himself as a police officer.  On Tuesday, May 26th at 4:30 p.m. a female called into the Polk County Sheriff’s Office stating that she was stopped by an unmarked white four door sedan with a black push bumper and “big” red/blue emergency lights on top near the 14200 block of NE 22nd Street.

The suspect, who was dressed in a black button down shirt and black pants, told the driver that he had pulled her over for speeding.  The suspect then asked the driver to exit her vehicle so that he could search her car.  The driver was suspicious of the suspect’s behavior, advising him that she was going to call 911 to ask for another officer.  At that time the suspect got back into his car and left northbound on NE 22nd Street.

The suspect is described as a tall, skinny, white male in his late 40’s to early 50’s with brown eyes and partially balding gray hair.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is vigorously investigating this incident.  Impersonating a police officer in the state of Iowa is an aggravated misdemeanor, punishable by up to two years in prison.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office would like to advise the public that if they are ever stopped by a person who he/she believes is not a police officer we ask that they call 911 to confirm that the traffic stop is legitimate.  If you do not have access to phone in your vehicle, you should obey all traffic laws and continue driving until you reach a well lit public area.  After pulling over, if you suspect that the person is not a police officer, advise them that you would like a uniformed officer present.

If anyone has information related to the case please call Polk County Crime Stoppers at 515-223-1400 or contact them by email at www.polkcountycrimestoppers.org.

Iowa Law Enforcement Officers will increase their presence in eastern Polk County on the evening of February 13, 2015 for an event organized by the Central Iowa Traffic Safety Task Force, (CITSTF), and Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau, (GTSB).

Law Enforcement Officers from many central Iowa jurisdictions will be enforcing all traffic laws while paying close attention to seatbelt usage and speed awareness.

Statistics show that wearing seat belts saves lives and that following traffic laws reduces the number and severity of motor vehicle accidents.  These projects are intended to raise awareness of safe driving habits in order to save lives.

We remind Iowans to buckle up and drive safely!

POLK COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICERS REUNITES DOG THAT HAS BEEN MISSING FOR OVER A YEAR WITH HIS OWNER Tue, 10 Feb 2015 07:37:21 GMT /sheriff/news-press-releases/polk-county-animal-control-officers-reunites-dog-that-has-been-missing-for-over-a-year-with-his-owner/ POLK COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICERS

REUNITES DOG THAT HAS BEEN MISSING FOR OVER A YEAR WITH HIS OWNER

February 9th

POLK COUNTY, Iowa

On December 29th, 2013 JD and Erica Fitch noticed that the gate in their backyard had blown open and their dog “Bear” was gone.  From that day forward JD and Erica have been relentlessly searching for Bear, a six year old Border Collie/German Shepherd mix that the two had rescued in 2008 from a dog fighting ring out of Sioux City Iowa.

After Bear went missing, JD posted fliers, set up game cameras in the neighborhood and contact Polk County Animal Control in hopes of locating their “best friend”.  Bear hadn’t been seen in over 14 months, that is until last Thursday when Polk County Zoning Officer Fred Hale observed a stray dog in a wooded area near the 6000 block of NE 14th Street.  Officer Hale contacted Polk County Animal Control Officer Bill King, giving him a description of the dog and its location.  Officer King realized that the description of the dog matched the description of Bear.

Officer King contacted JD and Erica and the three of them were able to confirm that the stray dog was in fact Bear however they were unable to get close enough to catch him.  Officer King asked JD and Erica for some personal items to put near a “live trap” which was bated with food and set up in a location where Bear was last seen.  On Saturday, February 7th, 2015 Officer King received a call from JD.  JD, who was extremely excited, told Officer King that when he went to check the live trap, Bear was located inside.

Bear is in good health and is now reunited with his owners after 14 long months.  JD said that he wants to get Bear’s story out there to give others hope who are in similar situations.  JD also wanted to thank all the people involved, including Polk County Zoning Officer Fred Hale and Polk County Animal Control Officers Bill King and Jessica Moeller.
