FRAUD CASE DEMANDING PAYMENT USING SHERIFF'S OFFICE NAME
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office was made aware once again of a fraudulent phone scam demanding payment that was due to pay fines that were incurred for not showing up for jury duty. Phone calls have been received by victims around the metro area. The caller stated that they have sent out numerous certified letters for them to report to jury duty. Their failure to do so has incurred a substantial fine. They are instructed to get that fine in cash, or on a pre-paid card and then call them back at numbers that appear to be local numbers and when called give the appearance to be that of local law enforcement recorded messages. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office does not operate in this manner and would not demand money payment by phone for fines incurred. If you ever doubt the validity of any claims for payment- ask the caller for his/her name and phone number and call your local law enforcement agency to verify any claims. Polk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating these incidents and will continue to follow up on these incidents.
Similar requests claiming to be made by representatives of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office are indeed false and should be reported to local law enforcement. This type of activity is a crime and will be investigated and taken very seriously.
