FRAUDULENT DEMANDS MADE USING SHERIFF’S OFFICE NAME - April 23, 2013
Thursday, June 13, 2013
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office was made aware of a fraudulent phone scam demanding payment in order to rectify an outstanding debt and avoid being arrested. Phone calls were received by one of the victims at work; the caller claimed to be a deputy with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and even used the name of a current employee at this agency. Victims were instructed by the caller to immediately repay an alleged outstanding debt through a “Money Pack” at Wal-Mart.
Similar requests claiming to be made by representatives of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office are indeed false and should be reported to local law enforcement. This type of activity is a crime and will be investigated and taken very seriously.
