SUBMERGED VEHICLE RECOVERED FROM POND IN GRIMES - April 21, 2013
Thursday, June 13, 2013
Polk County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched just after 5:00 a.m. today to a pond in the 800 block of East 1st Street, (near the Kum & Go on Highway 44), in Grimes regarding a vehicle in the water. Witnesses reported that the vehicle, a black Ford Explorer, had been westbound on Highway 44, just west of Highway 141. Then it crossed the median and the eastbound lanes of traffic near Grimes Tire and Auto. The Explorer then travelled through the grass area in front of the store, across their parking lot and into the pond just west of the building.
Grimes Fire Rescue, Johnston Fire Department, Metro STAR’s Dive Team, Central Iowa Underwater Search and Rescue (CIUSR), and G & S Service were all requested to respond to the scene. Divers were able to attach a cable to the submerged Explorer and then G & S Service towed it out of the water. Eddy Clark, age 71 of Grimes, was found inside the vehicle. Staff from the Polk County Medical Examiner’s Office were present and pronounced him deceased at the scene. The cause of this incident is unknown and is under investigation; additional information will be released when it is available.
Thanks to all agencies that assisted, including the Grimes Tire and Auto Center for allowing the use of their property, and to the CIUSR team which consists of civilian volunteers.
