ORIGINAL PRESS RELEASE:
At approximately 1:30 a.m. this morning a clerk at the Kum & Go at NE 60th Street and University Avenue in Pleasant Hill reported a theft of merchandise and was able to give the associated vehicle’s license plate number and the direction of travel. About 2 minutes later, a Polk County Deputy intercepted the suspect vehicle, a white Buick Skylark, at NE 56th Street and E. Oakwood Drive and attempted a traffic stop. The driver of the Buick initially slowed down, but then suddenly accelerated and continued west on E. Oakwood Drive. As the deputy approached the crest of a hill a few blocks further, in the 4900 block of E. Oakwood, he could see sparks from damaged power lines and then saw the Buick in the front yard of the house at 4705.
The vehicle landed on its side and was occupied by the driver and one passenger, 22-year old Justin Formaro of Des Moines. Deputies are attempting to confirm the driver’s identity; a secondary press release will follow as soon as the information is available. Both occupants were seriously injured and transported by medical personnel. Damage to neighboring yards, (near 4705 E. Oakwood), was visible and at least one utility pole required immediate repair by MidAmerican Energy.
