DISTRICT 1 - Supervisor Robert Brownell
Robert Brownell was elected in 2000 and is serving his third term. He represents
the 1st District which is made up of Clive, West Des Moines and southwestern Des
Moines. Mr. Brownell’s experience in government began as a city councilmember in
Clive, elected in 1985. He was elected as Mayor in 1993 where he served until his
election to the Polk County Board of Supervisors in 2000. Mr. Brownell is a Republican.
Brownell has served as the chair of the Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitor’s Bureau
and as a member of the Metropolitan Planning Organization. He is also the representative
on Aging Resources Council, Civic Center Board, Chair; Neighborhood Finance Corporation,
Polk
County Appeals Board and several internal steering committees.
Brownell was raised in Cedar Rapids, Ia. He attended Missouri Military Academy
in Mexico, Missouri and graduated from Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids. He obtained
his undergraduate degree from the University of Northern Iowa cum laude in English
and Education. He has attended Drake University for post graduate work. Mr. Brownell
served as Branch Manager for Yellow Transportation in Des Moines for 15 years. Prior
to Yellow he held several management positions with Roadway Express across the Midwest.
He is currently a minority owner in Exel Transportation Services, a transportation
services provider.
Brownell is married to Jenna Jurgensen of Des Moines and has one son, Kevin.
Jenna volunteers for numerous organizations across the metro area. Kevin and
his wife, Maria, are attorneys in Des Moines.
