Global Spectrum presents Iowa Events Center Profits to Polk County
DES MOINES, Iowa - Global Spectrum, operators of the Iowa Events Center, presented a check in the amount of $1,207,288 to the Polk County Board of Supervisors today due to profits from operating the Iowa Events Center in fiscal year 2013-2014. The record profit is more than double any previous profit from operations at the Iowa Events Center, and is the eighth consecutive year the facility has exceeded budget. The Iowa Events Center is comprised of Wells Fargo Arena, Hy-Vee Hall, and the Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center at Veterans Memorial and is owned by Polk County.
“The Board of Supervisors are thankful for the terrific relationship that we have with Global Spectrum, their General Manager and their staff,” said Supervisor John Mauro, Polk County Board of Supervisors Chair. “Global Spectrum has done an outstanding job managing our facilities at the Iowa Events Center and the success that we share with them allows us to reinvest in our community through economic development initiatives and non-profit organizations that benefit us all.”
From July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014 the Iowa Events Center hosted 566 events, which are the most events ever hosted in the three facilities for one year. The two convention centers (Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center at Veterans Memorial and Hy-Vee Hall) combined to generate over $10 Million in gross revenues for the first time ever, and Ovations Food Services achieved their highest food and beverage revenue since the convention facilities opened in late 2004. Another tremendous achievement was that while the facility hosted nearly 80 more events than last year, client satisfaction survey scores increased from 4.75 to 4.85 (on a 5.0 scale)
“We are honored that Polk County continues to put their trust in our staff to operate the Iowa Events Center at a high level,” said Global Spectrum’s Chris Connolly, General Manager of the Iowa Events Center. “Their vision to complete the renovation and open Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center at Veterans Memorial has allowed for growth in our convention business and bringing additional events to downtown Des Moines.”
Wells Fargo Arena welcomed hockey back when the Iowa Wild opened their inaugural season this past October and joined the Iowa Energy and Iowa Barnstormers as tenants. The success of their first season, combined with a strong concert and family show lineup helped make this past year the best financial year at Wells Fargo Arena since it opened in July 2005. The arena saw some transformed spaces during the past year, including the opening of the KetelOne Bar at the Willis Auto Campus Lounge, located on the suite level. George Strait’s Farewell Tour, Taylor Swift, Cher, Justin Beiber and P!nk all played to sold out crowds over the past year.
“Wells Fargo Arena had a tremendous year in terms of events and our sports teams,” said Connolly. “Our major concerts over the past year saw five of them gross over $1 Million in ticket sales, which shows the support the Central Iowa community has for live entertainment. With a strong early lineup for this next fiscal year, we are excited about the arena as it approaches its 10th Anniversary next July.”
Fiscal Year 2014-2015, which began July 1, 2014, has some exciting events on the calendar at the Iowa Events Center. At the arena, KISS and Def Leppard, Eric Church, The Eagles, and the Hy-Vee Big Four Classic have already been announced while the Convention Center is currently hosting the AAU National Junior Olympics, hosts the National Pheasant Fest and Quail Classic in February, Iowa Power Farming, the Des Moines Home and Garden Show, and many other events over the next 12 months.
