DES MOINES, Iowa – September 11, 2013 —Polk County Veteran Affairs prepares for participation in the Homeless Stand-down set for this weekend on the east side of the Iowa State Capitol grounds. Polk County Veteran Affairs, Veterans Administration Medical Center, Veterans Benefits Administration, State of Iowa, United Way, local churches and service organizations will be holding a stand-down event for area homeless individuals September 13 – 15th. This event is open to all homeless or anyone at-risk of being homeless. Sleeping tents for men and women will be provided throughout the weekend.
“The Homeless Stand-down is an important event for our community. It provides a way for us to bring to the forefront the issues of homelessness while providing needed services to those who are homeless or are at-risk of becoming homeless,” stated Polk County Veteran Affairs Board Chair Terry Lipovac.
Flu shots will be available for eligible veterans. Free haircuts will also be provided. Veteran service organizations will be on-site all weekend to assist veterans in filing compensation or pension claims. Central Iowa Shelter Services (CISS) will provide information and assistance. VA Medical will be on site to provide health assessments to veterans. Free cell phone application assistance will be provided. There will be live entertainment throughout the weekend with Bingo scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Free transportation to and from the stand-down beginning 4 p.m. on Friday and during operational hours, as well as transportation from the stand-down to CISS for those wishing to use shower facilities will be provided. Iowa Workforce Development will provide assistance with employment needs. Polk County Veteran Affairs will assist Polk County Veterans by providing information regarding budget eligibility for veterans needing financial assistance for food or shelter needs. Iowa Legal Aid, 5th Judicial Department of Corrections Probation, U.S. District Court Judge and an attorney will be available throughout the weekend to discuss issues with all participants.
