Published 4/30/2025 3:53:03 PM

From groundbreakings for new projects to ribbon cuttings for completed parks, this summer will be filled with new beginnings and new spots for you to explore.

Ready for Riders

Fourmile Mountain Bike Park

Get ready for adventure. Fourmile Mountain Bike Park will be open to cyclists, trail runners, and walkers alike this spring now that the bike-optimized trails are complete. This summer and fall contractors will continue work constructing parking, lights, a restroom, and stabilizing the banks of the stream that bisects the park. A celebration ride is planned for fall when work is complete.

Construction

ICON Whitewater Trailhead

Design is nearly complete and just a few regulatory approvals remain before construction begins on this whitewater site along the Raccoon River, north of Gray’s Lake. Expect a groundbreaking ceremony in July, with earth movers working fast to replace the dam, create an in-water recreation and fish passage, and develop the shoreline. The water trail site will open in 2026.

Opening

Raccoon River Boat Ramp

Urban paddlers and boaters will enjoy this new access to the Raccoon River. Situated along 1st Street in West Des Moines and north of Brown’s Woods, this is the first recreation space along the east side of the growing Raccoon River Greenway. Expect ample parking, bike racks for the adjacent trail users, and the boat ramp, of course. A dedication event is set for June 13, 2025.

Opening

Two Rivers Park

Mid-American Energy is constructing a vibrant natural space in downtown Des Moines at the confluence of the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers. This park will have accessible walkways, native flowers and trees, and a striking overlook of the rivers. Polk County Conservation will manage the park on behalf of the energy company, city, and county. Opening is expected mid-summer.
