Des Moines City Council At Large Special Election

In consultation with the Polk County Election Office, the Des Moines City council has set the special election for the vacant at large city council seat for March 19, 2024.

Candidates will file the nomination petitions and an affidavit of candidacy at the Polk County Election Office (120 2nd Avenue). The nomination petitions require the signatures of least 75 eligible electors in the city of Des Moines. The forms can be accessed on the Iowa Secretary of State website https://sos.iowa.gov/elections/electioninfo/cityelections.html

The deadline to for candidates to file for this election is February 23, 2024 at 5 PM.

The Polk County Election Office is open 8 AM – 5 PM Monday through Friday (Except holidays).

Des Moines Council at Large Special Election Dates:

Wednesday, February 28 – 1st Day of Voting, in Person at the Election Office & 1st Day Absentee Ballots are mailed – If ballots are ready

Monday, March 4 – Last Day to Request an Absentee Ballot by Mail

Monday, March 4 – Voter Pre-registration Deadline

Monday, March 18 – Last Day to Vote Early, in Person at the Election Office

Tuesday, March 19 –  Election Day – Polls open from 7:00 AM – 8:00 PM
