Pay by Mail
COVID: For title transactions, when mailing or dropping, we encourage you to leave your phone number in case we have questions or to pay over the phone via credit card or echeck.
Payments can be made by check, cashiers check, and/or money order. DO NOT SEND CASH by mail. Credit cards are NOT accepted through the mail.
Make payable to: Mary L. Wells, Polk County Treasurer
Polk County Treasurer
Polk County Administration Building
111 Court Avenue, Room 154
Des Moines, IA 50309-2298
Do not postdate your check. If your check is returned unpaid due to non-sufficient funds or a closed account, you will be assessed a $30.00 surcharge in addition to any accrued.
The Treasurer's Office accepts money orders as payment.
Please mail early and use the envelope that is provided with your tax and/or vehicle statement. Also, be sure to affix the correct amount of postage on the envelope--including extra postage for oversized and/or heavy envelopes. We cannot accept mail that has postage due. Mailed payments must have a U.S. Postal Service postmark dated on or before the due date to avoid a late interest.
The U.S. Postal Service postmark is the only date recognized for date of mailing. We do not accept the date written on your check or a business metered date as proof of the mailing date. Before mailing your payment, check with your local post office to make sure the postmark date will be prior to the interest and/or penalty date. If you want to be sure that your payment has a postmark before the interest and/or penalty date, have the post office postmark the envelope in your presence.
