Vehicle Title Replacement / Lost
How do I apply for a lost or replacement title?
Complete the Application for Replacement of Iowa Certificate of Title to a Motor Vehicle (Duplicate Title Application) (Iowa DOT form 411033). The application must be signed by all owners. If there is an open lien on the vehicle, the application will need to be signed by the lien holder. If there is an open lien on the title, but the lien holder does not have an interest in the vehicle any longer, they may complete a separate notarized Cancellation of Security Interest (Iowa DOT form 411168) or issue a letter on their letterhead paper releasing interest. The letter must contain the following information: make, year, VIN, owners name(s) and address, signature of authorized person and the letter must be notarized.
Once the application is received either in person or by mail there is a mandatory 5-day waiting period for lost titles before the replacement title is issued. If you have the original title to turn in with the application, the 5-day waiting period is waived. The fee for a replacement title is $25.00.
There is no fee due if the original title was sent to the owner or secured party through the United States Postal Service and was lost or damaged in transit, and an application for a replacement was made not less than 20 days and not more than 60 days from the date the original was issued by the county treasurer. If the replacement is issued without fee, this form (Lost in Mail form) must be included with the Application for Replacement of Iowa Certificate of Title to a Motor Vehicle (Duplicate Title Application) (Iowa DOT form 411033).
What if my car is not titled in Iowa and I cannot find my title?
If the vehicle has an out-of-state title, then the owner will have to apply for a replacement title in the state where the vehicle was last titled.
