Polk County Health Department Releases Annual Report

The Polk County Health Department (PCHD) has released its 2023-2024 Annual Report, highlighting efforts that took place throughout the fiscal year. From addressing critical community issues to fostering health equity, the report reflects PCHD’s commitment to improving the lives of Polk County residents.  

“As I reflect on the past year, I am incredibly proud of the resilience and dedication our team has shown in meeting challenges and bringing forward initiatives that strengthen our community,” said Helen Eddy, Polk County Health Department Director. “This report showcases the impactful work we’ve done together to create conditions for all residents to live healthy lives.”  

Key highlights from the report include:  

  • Ribbons of Hope Program: Provided over 1,800 free cancer screenings and patient navigation services, helping to detect cancer early and connect individuals with critical resources.  
  • Talk It Up, Lock It Up Gun Safety Campaign: Distributed over 1,700 free gun locks at more than 40 locations, addressing firearm safety and reducing injuries.  
  • Lead Hazard Home Repair Program: Conducted 50 home repairs to remove lead hazards, keeping young children who live in or visit older homes safe from lead poisoning.  
  • Community Health Workers: Engaged Latino residents through culturally tailored education on brain health and Alzheimer’s awareness, bridging gaps in access to care. 
  • Harm Reduction Efforts: Distributed 500 harm reduction kits and 300 hygiene kits to support community health.
  • Immunizations: 2,418 childhood immunizations and 3,281 travel-related vaccinations administered.  
  • STI Investigations: 5,108 cases investigated, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and HIV.  
  • Outbreak Management: Response to 15 outbreaks, including respiratory and foodborne illnesses.
