Evening Cooling Center Hours Available Today
(Des Moines, IA) – The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory, which will include Polk County, from noon on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 until 8 pm Saturday, July 22, 2017. Temperatures each day will rise rapidly after sunrise to reach heat index values between 100 and 110 degrees by early afternoon. The heat will persist into the early morning hours, with very little overnight relief. Both the extreme temperatures and the duration of this event will put people at significant risk of heat-related illness or death. To give residents of Polk County an additional option to reduce their risk for serious heat-related health issues, an extended hour cooling center will be open tonight Thursday, July 20, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church at 4300 Beaver Ave.
DART is offering free rides to the extended hour cooling center and other daytime cooling centers. Zion Lutheran Church is located around DART Route 14. The offer is good on all local routes from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. To ride for free, passengers need only tell the bus operator that they are going to a cooling center.
Schedule information is available online at www.ridedart.com or by calling the Customer Service Line at 515-283-8100 until 7 p.m. For calls after 7 p.m., please call 515-283-8108. Paratransit-approved riders can also use DART’s paratransit services to reach the cooling centers.
Two hours in air conditioning can significantly reduce the risk of health problems such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Many public places such as malls, libraries and other public businesses, are air conditioned and are open to the public as daytime cooling centers. Call United Way 2-1-1 or visit the Polk County Health Department’s web site at http://www.polkcountyiowa.gov/health/ for exact hours and locations throughout the week.
