First hot weather of the season
May 15, 2017
The Central Iowa area is experiencing the first hot weather of the season today and tomorrow. Our bodies may not be as prepared as usual to adjust to the hot and humid weather so soon, increasing the risk for heat illness and heat stress. Anyone is at risk for heat illnesses but older adults, people with chronic health conditions, outdoor workers and athletes practicing outdoors are at an increased risk.
Individuals should practice the following tips to avoid heat illness and stress:
- Drink plenty of water. DO NOT wait until you are thirsty to drink. Avoid drinking alcoholic and caffeinated beverages as they dehydrate you.
- Do not spend time extended periods of time outdoors doing yardwork or exercising. Our bodies have not adjusted to the hot and humid weather yet.
- Try to avoid being outdoors to do outside work or exercise in the hottest portion of the day: 11 AM to 4 PM.
