Health Department and Community Partners Host Health Insurance Enrollment and Renewal Fair
The Polk County Health Department, Broadlawns Medical Center, Visiting Nurse Services of Iowa and Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines will host a health insurance enrollment and re-enrollment fair on Saturday, December 9, 2017 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Evelyn Davis Center (801 University Ave, Unit 3 in Des Moines).
“This open enrollment period is shorter than previous years,” said Rick Kozin, director of Polk County Health Department. “It’s important for individuals and families to act quickly to make sure everyone has health insurance in case the unexpected happens.”
The period of open enrollment began November 1, 2017. Individuals and families have the opportunity to enroll, re-enroll or change a 2018 insurance plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace. December 15, 2017 is the last day to enroll in or change plans for 2018 coverage. After this date, you can enroll or change plans only if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. If the premium to the new plan is paid, your 2018 coverage starts January 1, 2018.
In order to help individuals understand their choices and assist them with the enrollment and re-enrollment process, the enrollment and renewal fair will provide individuals with one-on-one enrollment assistance from licensed navigators and certified application counselors. This enrollment fair will provide individuals with detailed information about each Marketplace Health Insurance Plan offered in Iowa and can help determine eligibility for Marketplace subsidies. Spanish interpreters will be available.
“We know that there are still many Polk County residents without health insurance,” said Kozin. “Last month, our open enrollment and renewal fair helped 10 families with 21 individuals find plans that worked for their needs. This is an opportunity for them to discuss their options with trained professionals who understand their family’s health insurance concerns.”
In order to complete the enrollment application at the fair, please bring the following information:
- Current ID
- Social Security Card
- 2016 Income Tax Returns
- If employed, last pay stub
- Every client must have an email address and account information to receive notice of coverage decisions and requests for additional information
