SNAP in a Day
(Des Moines, IA) – The Polk County Health Department, Polk County Community, Youth and Family Services and the Iowa Department of Human Services (DHS) will host a SNAP in a Day (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) Enrollment Fair on Saturday, April 18, 2015, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Polk County River Place (2309 Euclid Ave. Des Moines).
“Over 50,000 people in our community are food insecure,” said Rick Kozin, Polk County Health Department Director. "That means they don't have enough money, or food, to get through the month."
SNAP benefits are provided on an electronic benefits transfer (EBT) card, which may be used at various locations including grocery stores and Farmers’ Markets to purchase food items. Benefits depend on income, household size and expenses. People eligible for Food Assistance must be residents of Iowa who are U.S. citizens or legally qualified non-citizens such as refugees. The program is federally funded and administered by Iowa DHS, and about 195,000 Iowa families receive benefits each month.
"Only about 75 percent of the families in our community who are eligible for SNAP benefits are currently participating in the program," said Brian Boyer, Polk County Community, Family and Youth Services Director. "This event is designed to encourage families in need to participate and help keep their family members healthy.”
To participate in the event, individuals will need to bring an identification card, pay stubs for individuals in the household who work and any child support orders. Interpreters will be available. Individuals who need transportation are asked to call Linda at (515) 286-3406 and will be placed on the transportation list.
"We are excited to partner with Polk County to give families a weekend opportunity to get assistance with enrolling in the program,” said Sone Xaykose, Income Maintenance Administrator with DHS. “SNAP benefits can help Iowans provide the food their family needs to lead healthy, stable lives.”
