Public Works Department

The Public Works Department is divided into Three Divisions: Air Quality, Engineering & Roads, and Planning & Development. It is one of the largest departments within Polk County and offers community services including construction, maintenance and inventory of Polk County Secondary Roads and bridge system, including survey, design and inspection, maintenance and snow removal, vegetation control, land use planning and zoning regulations, building permits, construction inspection, sanitary & sewer infrastructure, air quality control, management of drainage districts and code enforcement.


Mission Statement

The mission of the Polk County Public Works Department is to develop, manage, and maintain the highest quality road system, provide excellent snow removal and weed eradication services, promote orderly growth, protect our health and environment and ensure structures and uses are safe and sound. All these services help to enhance the quality of life for all citizens of Polk County.

Ne 70 St - Road Closure

Beginning June 5, 2018, the City of Pleasant HIll will close NE 70 St, South of E. University Ave (Hwy 163) to SE 6 Ave for reconstruction.  The link below will take you to the City of Pleasant Hill website for more info.

Flooding Road Closures

CLOSED INDEFINITELY DUE TO FLOODING SE Vandalia Dr and SE 104/SE 108 ST are closed due to high water - closed until at least Mid - December

Nw 126 Ave Closure - B/W Ne 6Th St And Nw 2Nd St

Beginning October 3, 2018, a culvert replacement project will begin on NW 126 Ave b/w NE 6th St and NW 2nd St - The road will be closed until approximately December 1. Map

Weed Mowing Season End

The 2018 Weed Mowing Season is now complete.  We will no longer be taking complaints.  We will respond to all other inquiries, but no action will be taken on mowing complaints.  The 2019 Weed Mowing Season will begin late April 2019.  Thank you. 

The Air Quality Division's objective is to achieve and maintain levels of air quality as will protect human health and safety. These objectives are accomplished through the following activities:
  • Review and Update Local Regulations
  • Process Title V, Operating and Construction Permit Applications
  • Provide Reporting and Compliance Assistance
  • Operate Air Sampling Equipment and Collect Air Monitoring Data
The Engineering Division responds to requests or concerns regarding:
  • Roadway repairs or other drainage complaints
  • Entrance permit applications
  • Permitting of utility or other work in the right-of-way
  • Snow removal on Polk County roads
  • Issues oversize/overweight vehicle permits
Polk County Planning & Development is responsible for the following:
  • Polk County Comprehensive Plan
  • Administering Zoning and Subdivision Ordinances
  • Construction Codes, Permitting & Inspections
  • Housing Rehabilitation and Weatherization Programs
  • Sanitary, Sewer and Environmental Health Rules and Regulations
