The Social Security Office advises that if anyone has fallen victim of this scam that it can be reported to the Social Security Inspector General.

POLK COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE DONATES 100 FANS - JULY 17, 2019 Wed, 17 Jul 2019 13:52:28 GMT /sheriff/news-press-releases/polk-county-sheriffs-office-donates-100-fans-july-17-2019/ Upcoming Heat Advisories

Within the next few days central Iowa is going to endure dangerously high temperatures.  Meteorologists are forecasting that the heat index will be in the triple digits for the next 2-3 days.  With these temperatures it is important to check on anyone that is prone to heat injuries, such as young children and the elderly.  Extra precautions should be made to avoid heat-related illnesses such as drinking plenty of cool, non-alcoholic and caffeinated beverages.  Wear lightweight and light-colored clothing.  Remember, don’t sit directly in front of a fan as it can cause increased dehydration and do use cool towels on your head and neck.

Understanding that not everyone is able to enjoy air conditioning, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office is donating 100 fans for those who need help staying cool.  Sheriff Kevin Schneider said, “Public safety isn’t just about law enforcement, it is also about protecting the health and well-being of the citizens we serve.  Our partners that provide social services to Polk County do a phenomenal job and we just want to do our part.”

Supervisor Angela Connolly reminded citizens to “Take advantage of the cooling centers provided by the Polk County Health Department, and to be conscious of dehydration.” Supervisor Connelly reminded everyone that DART is providing free rides to the cooling stations and added, “This extreme heat can be dangerous to people and pets so it is important to spend at least two hours in air conditioning per day, drink plenty of water, and become familiar with the signs of heat exhaustion.”

To find a list of daytime cooling centers near you, please visit www.polkcountyiowa.gov/health

The donated fans will be at the following locations:

Drake – 3326 University Ave, Des Moines

South Side – 500 Army Post Rd. Suite 17, Des Moines

Ankeny – 2701 SE Convenience Blvd, Suite 2, Ankeny

In order to be eligible to receive a fan one must be a resident of Polk County, at or below 175% of the Federal Poverty Level, and have not received a fan from IMPACT in the past year.  Limit one fan per household.

If anyone is in need of a fan and unable to make it to one of these locations, they can call IMPACT at 515-274-1334 for assistance.
