Polk County, Iowa

Iowa Law Enforcement Officers will increase their presence in the area of central Polk County on Friday, November 17, 2017, for an event organized by the Central Iowa Traffic Safety Task Force, (CITSTF), and Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau, (GTSB).

Law Enforcement Officers from many central Iowa jurisdictions will be enforcing all traffic laws while paying close attention to seatbelt usage and other traffic violations.

POLK COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE ANNOUNCES NOBLE CHAPTER - JUNE 29, 2017 Wed, 28 Jun 2017 14:37:18 GMT /sheriff/news-press-releases/polk-county-sheriffs-office-announces-noble-chapter-june-29-2017/ Polk County Sheriff’s Office Announces NOBLE Chapter

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to host a ceremony to announce that the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) has accepted a request for an Iowa Chapter. Due to the efforts of Polk County CID Captain Bob Stanton, 5th Judicial District Supervisor Art Rabon, Polk County Court Services Sgt Keith Onley, and Polk County Jail Sgt Amos Holt, representatives from NOBLE will be at the Polk County Jail on Thursday, June 29th, at 10:00am to welcome the new Iowa Chapter. Membership will be offered to all local agencies in Iowa and bordering states, creating a communication network among multiple agencies.

NOBLE is directed towards African-Americans in the Law Enforcement community. Diversity, however, is a key issue, with NOBLE memberships spanning all races, cultures, and religions. NOBLE has nearly 60 chapters representing over 3,000 members worldwide and serves more than 60,000 youths.

A NOBLE chapter here in Iowa would assist in recruitment efforts and vastly increase diversity within the Iowa Law Enforcement community. NOBLE also helps train law enforcement officers, bridges racial divides, and helps create strong voices within our communities.

NOBLE is geared toward anyone in the Law Enforcement community or supporters of Law Enforcement. Members consists of Civil Service Command Staff to Civilian Detention Officers to Business Sponsors from the Federal, State, and Local levels and many others.

Brenda Goss Andrews, NOBLE Region IV Vice-President (Brenda.region4vp@gmail.com) , stated, “I am very excited about the formation of our first NOBLE chapter in Iowa. NOBLE looks forward to working with this new chapter to forge partnerships and build collaborative relationships between Law Enforcement and the community.”

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office would like to invite the media to this important event. If you plan on covering this, please contact Lt. Rich Blaylock, Public Information Officer.

INCREASE IN FRAUDULENT PHONE SCAMS ACROSS POLK COUNTY - JUNE 9, 2017 Fri, 09 Jun 2017 13:44:18 GMT /sheriff/news-press-releases/increase-in-fraudulent-phone-scams-across-polk-county-june-9-2017/ INCREASE IN FRAUDULENT PHONE SCAMS ACROSS POLK COUNTY

June 9, 2017

Polk County, Iowa

There is currently a SIGNIFICANT INCREASE in fraudulent phone scams across Polk County. We want everyone to be aware of these scams and to be watchful for what is occurring.  The exact number of different scams out there is unknown; however, they all seem to revolve around one nexus; in most cases the criminal(s) involved are threatening arrest unless immediate payment is made over the phone.

Today, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center has received multiple calls from citizens who have been contacted by an unknown male claiming to be “Polk County Deputy Kenneth Cook”, from telephone number 515-994-8848.  The criminal in this particular phone scam is ordering victims to go directly to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office located at 6023 NE 14th Street to pay a $2000 fine as a result of failing to show up for jury duty.  Victims are reporting that the scam artist is very aggressive, threatening to issue arrest warrants if payment is not made.  It should also be known that upon call back to this phone number, a fraudulent voice mailbox has been set up stating that the number belongs to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

The person involved in this phone scam reportedly has basic knowledge of the victim’s personal information, including home address, cell phone number and employer.

This is a scam; the Polk County Sheriff’s Office does not employ a deputy by the name of “Kenneth Cook”, nor would we ever contact citizens by telephone for the purpose of collecting fines or any other payment.

Anyone receiving telephone calls of this nature should not comply with payment. If a call like this is received, don’t offer revealing personal information and ask specific questions; anything suspicious in nature should be reported to local law enforcement.

Please be vigilant and spread the word to your friends, family and coworkers.
