INCREASE IN FRAUDULENT PHONE SCAMS ACROSS POLK COUNTY
June 9, 2017
Polk County, Iowa
There is currently a SIGNIFICANT INCREASE in fraudulent phone scams across Polk County. We want everyone to be aware of these scams and to be watchful for what is occurring. The exact number of different scams out there is unknown; however, they all seem to revolve around one nexus; in most cases the criminal(s) involved are threatening arrest unless immediate payment is made over the phone.
Today, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center has received multiple calls from citizens who have been contacted by an unknown male claiming to be “Polk County Deputy Kenneth Cook”, from telephone number 515-994-8848. The criminal in this particular phone scam is ordering victims to go directly to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office located at 6023 NE 14th Street to pay a $2000 fine as a result of failing to show up for jury duty. Victims are reporting that the scam artist is very aggressive, threatening to issue arrest warrants if payment is not made. It should also be known that upon call back to this phone number, a fraudulent voice mailbox has been set up stating that the number belongs to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
The person involved in this phone scam reportedly has basic knowledge of the victim’s personal information, including home address, cell phone number and employer.
This is a scam; the Polk County Sheriff’s Office does not employ a deputy by the name of “Kenneth Cook”, nor would we ever contact citizens by telephone for the purpose of collecting fines or any other payment.
Anyone receiving telephone calls of this nature should not comply with payment. If a call like this is received, don’t offer revealing personal information and ask specific questions; anything suspicious in nature should be reported to local law enforcement.
Please be vigilant and spread the word to your friends, family and coworkers.
