Wednesday, July 29, 2015
On Wednesday, July 29 the Polk County Board of Supervisors accepted a check for over $1.9 million in profits from the Iowa Events Center which is managed by Spectra. The Iowa Events Center consists of Wells Fargo Arena, Hy-Vee Hall and Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center at Veteran’s Memorial, is owned by Polk County and is managed by Spectra, formerly Global Spectrum.
Polk County Board of Supervisors Chair Angela Connolly said “This is a 58% increase from last year’s record profit of $1.2 million and is the ninth consecutive year that Spectra exceeded profit projections so needless to say, we are thrilled to be able to use this profit to invest back into our community.”
Wells Fargo Arena also celebrated its 10 year anniversary this month and in those ten years has been an economic catalyst for Central Iowa. During the last fiscal year there were 534 events booked that attracted over 1,200,000 visitors. Some of the high profile events included The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Ed Sheeran and Dave Matthews Band.
“This past year has exceeded all expectations and we could not be happier with our partnership with Spectra. We look forward to another successful year and are excited to see business continue to grow with the addition of the convention hotel,” said Supervisor Connolly.
During the next year the Iowa Events Center will host events that include Shania Twain, Taylor Swift, full schedules for the Iowa Wild, Iowa Energy and Iowa Barnstormers and notably, the 2016 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball First and Second Rounds. The Iowa Events Center staff and downtown leaders anticipate that the addition of the convention hotel will help attract more of these large events.
