Polk County Board of Supervisors and partners renew Court Avenue security agreements prior to NCAA basketball
DES MOINES, Iowa – March 19, 2019 — In 2016 the Polk County Board of Supervisors, City of Des Moines, Operation Downtown, the Historic Court District Association and Court Avenue business owners came together to enhance safety on Court Avenue. Electronic Engineering generously donated a security camera system for Court Avenue and the partners funded additional lighting and increased police presence. In anticipation of NCAA basketball crowds, these agreements have been renewed in order to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for residents and visitors.
Polk County Board of Supervisors Chair Tom Hockensmith said, “our priority has always been to provide a pleasant and safe experience to the residents and visitors of Polk County and were proud to partner with the City of Des Moines, the Historic Court Avenue District, and Operation Downtown to enhance the security measures on Court Avenue.” He added, “ we have been pleased with the results and we are especially impressed by the level of commitment from business owners on Court Avenue to participate in this initiative.”
Des Moines has generally been known as a safe community and the Court Avenue district has served as a hub for activity so ensuring safety in this area was critical in continuing the growth and development of our region. Mark Clark, owner of Electronic Engineering said “we are a company that is invested in our community and when there were issues happening on Court Avenue we wanted to be part of that solution so were happy to donate a new camera system. It has proved extremely useful in deterring criminal activity and assisting the Des Moines Police in investigating cases.”
The new agreements include funding commitments from the Polk County Board of Supervisors, the City of Des Moines and Operation Downtown. The Historic Court District Association will also remain a valuable partner in working with private business owners on Court Avenue to contribute funding that will allow these safety measures to remain in place for another three years.
