3 Things to Know when Transferring a Vehicle Title

Published 4/1/2025 11:10:37 AM

When ownership of a vehicle changes, the title must be transferred to the new owner. To learn more about the process, go to the Polk County Treasurer’s Office website at www.polkcountyiowa.gov/treasurer.

Follow these steps to ensure the process goes smoothly.

  1. Download the checklist to be sure all information, including a bill of sale even when it is a gift, is collected.
  2. Do not correct any information on the title with pen, pencil or correction fluid.
  3. Submit the completed information with your estimated payment.
    1. Mail information to 111 Court Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50309.
    2. Place items in the drop box located on the south side of the Polk County Administration Building at 111 Court Avenue, Des Moines.
    3. Schedule an appointment to conduct the transfer in person.

Determine fees using the fee estimator

Use the Iowa Department of Transportation Fee Estimator to estimate fees. Be sure to include postage fees as they are not included in the estimating tool. This tool is not mobile responsive.

If submitting documents by mail or using the drop box, include your phone number. For staff will contact you to make payment with an electronic check, credit card or debit card. Transaction fees will apply.

Title transfers can be completed by submitting the required forms using U.S. mail or placing items in the drop box.

An appointment is required if you are visiting our office to complete a title transfer. You must also show a valid Iowa driver's license for identification purposes.
