Polk County Property Taxes due September 30

Online payment option makes process simple and convenient.

Residential and mobile home property owners are reminded that property taxes are due by September 30. Payments received after the due date will incur a penalty of 1.5% per month.

“With the change in seasons and students going back to school, fall can be a particularly busy time of year for Polk County residents. Homeowners can save time by paying their property tax online,” says Polk County Treasurer Mary Wells.

“The online payment process is easy and saves time for our customers. Payments are processed immediately and receipt is provided.”

The online payment site can be found at www.iowataxandtags.org.

Payment options

To serve the needs of its customers, the Polk County Treasurer’s Office offers several payment options.

Online

Electronic payments including e-check, debit card or credit card can be made at www.iowataxandtags.org. A non-refundable $0.30 administrative fee will be applied to all electronic payments. Debit card and credit card payments will also incur a convenience fee.

U.S. Postal Service

Place the payment stub along with a check or money order. Mail to 111 Court Avenue, Des Moines, IA  50309. Payments must be postmarked by September 30, 2024, to avoid a late penalty. No cash payments should be mailed.

Drop box

Place the payment stub along with a check or money order in an envelope. Place the envelope in the drop box located outside the main entrance of the Polk County Administration Building, 111 Court Avenue, Des Moines. No cash payments should be left in the drop box.

Phone

Property taxes may be paid by e-check, credit card or debit card by calling 515-286-3060 during business hours. A non-refundable $0.30 administrative fee will be applied to all electronic payments. Debit card and credit card payments will also incur a convenience fee.

In person

Payments may be made in person at the Polk County Administration Building, 111 Court Ave., Des Moines. Hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. On the third Thursday of the month, hours are 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
