Annual Vehicle Registration
Renew Your Vehicle Registration Online
Vehicle owners are required to renew the vehicle’s registration annually.
Registration renewals completed and purchased online are mailed the next business day after the payment has been processed.
Your renewal includes a new tag that should be attached to the rear license plate.
Save time. Renew your vehicle registration online.
Registration renewals can also be mailed or placed in the drop box.
Unable to Renew Your Registration Online?
In some cases it may not possible to renew your registration online due to a “stop” or “hold” on the account.
This can happen when:
- Unresolved parking tickets exist in the cities of Des Moines, Urbandale or Indianola.
- Clerk of Court tickets have not been paid.
- Iowa Department of Revenue has a hold on the registration renewal due to unpaid taxes.
- SR-22 certificate of automobile liability insurance requirement has not been met.
- If a SR-22 certificate of automobile liability insurance is required, a copy of the AAMVA Financial Responsibility form must be submitted to the Polk County Treasurer’s Office before the registration renewal can be processed.
If the registration renewal can’t be completed online, call the vehicle registration division, 515-286-3030, or email car.treasurer@polkcountyiowa.gov for assistance.
Processing a Registration Renewal for a Family Member or Friend
Processing a registration renewal for someone other than yourself can be completed, yet the registration and tags will be mailed to the address of the vehicle owner.
To receive the registration and tags in person, a power of attorney must be in place.
