Des Moines, IA- Drivers on Interstate 235 and visitors to downtown Des Moines may have noticed a subtle but significant change to the city skyline in recent days. Polk County’s Iowa Events Center is in the process of testing a new exterior lighting package on the roof of Wells Fargo Area. The new lighting project is part of a roof replacement at the 19 year old facility.

Visitors to downtown Des Moines will certainly take note of the 576 LED lights that surround the new roof. Oak View Group, which operates the Iowa Events Center says the lighting structure is similar to what can be found on the inside the ballroom of Community Choice Convention Center at Veterans Memorial.

Polk County Board Chair Angela Connolly says, “The Iowa Events Center and our partners at Oak View Group have played such a significant role in the vibrancy of Des Moines for the past two decades. It was an easy decision to add even more of a splash to the skyline while undertaking roof replacement upgrades. We believe this addition will enhance the ‘wow’ factor that our riverfront already has for residents and visitors alike.

OVG 360 staff will have infinite possibilities with colors and dynamic lighting scenes including fade, chase, peel and comet. The colors and scenes are programmable through an online app and can be changed as needed to reflect the colors of a concert, event or celebration and/or recognition of a holiday or specific cause.

“We are thankful to the Polk County Board of Supervisors for continually investing back into the Iowa Events Center to ensure we utilize the best technology available,” said Oak View Group’s Chris Connolly, General Manager of the Iowa Events Center. “The lighting project helps us elevate the guest and client experience for events happening at Wells Fargo Arena, be more energy efficient with the use of LED lighting, as well as continuing to support local causes when available.”

Light system testing is expected to continue for the next several weeks. When the structure is fully operational, local organizations will be able to make requests for significant community events based on operational availability. An announcement on community requests will be forthcoming from Oak View Group.
