DES MOINES, IA – Iowan’s age 65 or older are eligible for a property tax exemption worth $3,250 for the assessment year beginning January 1, 2023. In subsequent years, the exemption will double to $6,500. Exemptions are a reduction in the taxable value of the property, not a direct reduction of how much property taxes a homeowner pays.
To be eligible, a homeowner must be 65 years old on or before January 1, 2023. Please note: most registered voters are automatically eligible for the property tax exemption and therefore no action is required. If a homeowner is unsure if they are a registered voter or if they would like to check the status of their eligibility, they are encouraged to contact the Polk County Assessor’s office at: 515.286.3014.
