Polk County Tornado Response

Des Moines, IA- Polk County officials held an emergency conference call on Saturday to address the devastating impact of recent tornadoes and severe storms that struck the eastern part of the county, particularly in Pleasant Hill, Iowa. The storms have left several homes damaged

During this call, officials provided an update on the current situation and outlined the emergency response efforts underway to support affected residents. The Polk County Emergency Management Agency has been working tirelessly to assess the extent of the damage and coordinate resources for those in need.

"We are saddened by the widespread damage caused by the tornadoes and storms in Pleasant Hill and across Polk County.” Says Polk County Board Chair Angela Connolly, “Our primary focus right now is on ensuring the safety and well-being of all our residents. We are working closely with local first responders, utility crews, and volunteer organizations to provide assistance and support to those impacted by this disaster."

As always, the community response for those impacted is appreciated. Pleasant Hill, Iowa will be coordinating the request for volunteers. Donations for those impacted should be sent to the disaster recovery fund in partnership with Polk County and the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation. 

Supervisor Tom Hockensmith, who represents the residents of Pleasant Hill, surveyed the damage and says, “This is the second time in 2 years this community has faced this kind of destruction. As a lifelong resident of Polk County, I am here to support my friends and neighbors and encourage them to reach out to me personally if I can be of assistance.”

Residents of Pleasant Hill and surrounding areas are urged to stay informed about the evolving situation and follow guidance from local Pleasant Hill authorities. Anyone in need of assistance or information can contact the Polk County by calling 2-1-1.

As the cleanup and recovery efforts continue, Polk County officials are committed to working on behalf of those affected by the tornadoes and storms. A request for state disaster assistance will be made by Polk County officials to help those impacted. Additional updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
