Earth Day Trash Bash - Strasser Woods

A collaborative annual event celebrated throughout the Des Moines Metro, Earth Day Trash Bash partners invite thousands of volunteers to come together and commit to a better and healthier environment in central Iowa.

Polk County Conservation staff will be stationed at Strasser Woods Forest Preserve in the Fourmile Creek Greenbelt offering participants the opportunity to engage in important habitat restoration work in our woodlands, contribute to beautifying the forest preserve, and protect the adjacent Fourmile Creek. Volunteers will have the options to plant trees, remove invasive plant species, harvest spring wildflower seeds, and pick up litter.

ECOLOGICAL IMPACT AREAS: Woodland ecosystem, wildlife habitat, water quality, soil health

PHYSICAL DIFFICULTY: Easy - Moderate

REGISTRATION: Required

By registering for this event, I acknowledge I am filling an open position. In the event that I and/or members of my group are unable to attend, I will cancel my registration to allow for others to join this event.

DEADLINE: Register noon the day prior. Late registrations and walkups welcome if event is not at capacity. Please notify Volunteer Coordinators to inquire about attendance.

COST: Free – lunch provided for all registered participants

GROUPS ALLOWED: Yes

AGES: All ages and abilities welcome. No experience necessary.

  • Ages 12+ will be permitted use of hand tools
  • Ages 18+ will be permitted use of power tools and equipment

WHAT TO BRING: It is recommended to wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Bring a refillable water bottle and gloves, if you have them. Gloves will be provided for those without. In an effort to promote sustainability at this event, please bring a refillable water bottle.

Each event participant will be provided proper personal protective equipment and training as needed.
