UPDATE: Victims walk canceled because of weather

UPDATE: Organizers have canceled the National Crime Victims' Rights Week Walk because of inclement weather. Registrants will be notified about refunds. 

April 17, 2024: 

The National Crime Victims' Rights Week Walk will move to a new location this year. 

The 1.2-mile walk is Saturday, April 27, and will start at East Walnut and Dey Streets near the Iowa State Capitol. At 9 a.m., participants will walk to the Polk County Administration Building, 111 Court Ave.  

From 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., the Administration Building’s parking lot will feature a resource fair, local law enforcement officers, a food truck, and a face painter. 

Registration is $20 and includes an event T-shirt. All registration costs will be donated to one of the service providers participating in the event. 

Groups participating include Blank Children’s STAR Child Center, Children & Families of Iowa, EMBARC (The Ethnic Minorities of Burma Advocacy and Resource Center), the Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault, the Iowa Attorney General’s Office, LUNA (Latina Unidas Por Un Nuevo Amanecer), Mid-Iowa Sexual Assault Response Team, Monsoon Asians & Pacific Islanders in Solidarity, and Polk County Crisis and Advocacy. 

Polk County Attorney Kimberly Graham encouraged people to learn how the groups support survivors of crime.  

“One of the most significant victims’ rights is the right to be heard,” Graham said. “Our office served 7,273 crime victims in 2023. We want to be sure they have a voice in the justice system.”
