Description: In this virtual training event, the U.S. Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) researchers highlight the key findings and implications from our research on school violence prevention. In this training, you will learn about the background, thinking, and behavior of school attackers and how some schools discovered and stopped plots before violence occurred. This training will provide guidance on how schools may develop or improve existing violence prevention programs utilizing a behavioral threat assessment model.

Intended Audience: School teachers, administrators, counsellors, mental health professionals, school resource officers (SROs), law enforcement officers, and other school safety stakeholders.

Preventing Mass Attacks in Our Communities

Description: In this virtual training event, NTAC researchers discuss important findings from our research on mass attacks perpetrated in public and semi-public spaces, including businesses, restaurants, bars, retail outlets, houses of worship, schools, open spaces, and more. This training will provide guidance on how communities may develop or improve existing violence prevention programs utilizing a behavioral threat assessment model.

Intended Audience: Law enforcement, corporate security, mental health professionals, faith-based community leaders, university faculty, threat assessment team members, and other community safety stakeholders.

K0419: Shelter Field Guide Training for State and Local Communities

This course was developed by the American Red Cross and FEMA to train participants in sheltering practices and techniques. It is designed for use with its companion piece, the Shelter Field Guide.

The goal of the course is to familiarize students with the seven different roles involved in sheltering, the resources available to shelters, how to prepare for shelter operations, and how to use the Shelter Field Guide to open, operate, and close a shelter.

This course will be delivered as a facilitated, distance learning training event using Adobe Connect sessions consisting of 10 hours of online instruction. This virtual course will be held over 2 consecutive days (5 hours/day).

There are no prerequisites for this course. EMI awards .8 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for completion of this course.

May 2: How and Why to Write a Chemical Hygiene Plan

OSHA requires a Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) for labs. Due to its focus on chemical safety, all areas of schools with chemicals should participate in its development. We will discuss topics required in the CHP, how coordination throughout the schools is required for certain aspects of the CHP, and review examples and templates to help you write this required document.

May 9: Facilities Managers: Roles and Responsibilities

Facilities Managers are often the recipients of unwanted chemicals and chemical waste that is generated throughout the school. They are also the primary decision makers in the selection of chemicals used in cleaning, maintenance and repair. In this webinar we will discuss strategies that Facilities Managers can implement to keep staff, students and teachers safe and in compliance.

May 16: Student Safety in the Lab

Safety in the science lab has been a focused topic of interest by several regulatory agencies and news media. Throughout the past twenty years, school science lab accidents have resulted in permanent injury to students and teachers. In this webinar we will work to understand the root cause of lab accidents and develop strategies to help students work safely in the lab.

From working with solvents and aerosols, to the use of acids, frequently art rooms are not adequately evaluated for safety and risk minimization. August 8: Inspection Strategies for Fire Inspectors and Insurance Carriers

Often inspectors are not well versed in the identification of chemicals of risk and dangerous chemical storage practices. Join us as we highlight focused questions to ask and observations to make to help correctly identify whether a schools chemical risk vulnerabilities have been identified and addressed adequately to keep teachers, students and staff safe.

August 15: Administrator and Insurance Carriers: Roles and Responsibilities

Schools work diligently and on every level of operation to keep students safe. In this webinar we will identify "quick checks" that administrators, insurance inspectors, and schools officials can implement to fully gauge the level of chemical risk presented in school. We will discuss questions to ask and steps to take to help continuously improve chemical management safety throughout a school district.
