Polk County Mosquito Remediation Efforts Set To Begin

Published 5/3/2023 10:41:43 AM

Des Moines, IA- During the week of May 15th, Polk County will apply larvicide product by helicopter to targeted areas in the unincorporated Polk County. These areas are prone to hold water and are determined to be prime mosquito habitats. The product is designed to prevent mosquito larvae from hatching into an adult mosquito. This is the most cost effective way to manage mosquito populations.

Polk County will also deploy mosquito traps in various areas within unincorporated Polk County. Thes traps are designed to collect and count adult mosquitoes. Those samples will be sent to Iowa State University for testing to identify any viruses that may exist. Depending on the count and/or if a virus is detected, vehicles are dispatched to the area to apply a treatment of an adulticide in late evenings for better management.
