Recreation and Education
All centers offer a variety of recreational, educational and health related activities on a daily basis. Activities include, billiards, ceramics, crafts, Wii, bingo, dominoes, crocheting and much more. Throughout the year we offer different activities, but there are a few things that are regular these include:
- Tournaments- Pool, Cribbage, and assorted card tournaments are held on a monthly basis.
- Annual Senior Fest & Health Fair- Held in May at the Varied Industries Building on the Iowa State Fairgrounds. This wonderful event is designed for those 60 years and older. Attendees will enjoy a day full of health screenings, vendor booths, music, a nutritious meal and other fun activities.
- Annual Volunteer Recognition Party- Held in September, this invitation only event is held at Hy-Vee Hall and recognizes individuals who serve in a volunteer capacity for Polk County.
Wellness Programming
Fitness classes led by a certified instructor are held 3 times per week at all full-time centers (Central, Eastside, Northside, Northwest, Norwoodville, Southside, and Westside).
Hours vary for classes at the part-time centers (Altoona, Ankeny, Grimes, Johnston, ML King, Pioneer, Runnells, Scott). Please contact the individual part-time centers for specific class schedules.
Fitness programming includes strength, cardio and flexibility exercises for older adults.
Tai Chi for Arthritis- A great exercise to help reduce stress and anxiety, improve balance and stability along with several other health benefits. This is a free one-hour class that will be held for 7 weeks. Contact Ranae at 265-8461 if you are interested.
