Polk County Property Tax Statements Arrive in Mailboxes This Week

(Des Moines, IA)- Residential and mobile home property tax statements for the 2022/2023 assessed year were mailed to Polk County property owners and will soon arrive in mailboxes.

First installment property tax payments are due by September 30, 2022. Beginning October 1, 2022, a penalty of 1.5% will be assessed on all late payments.

“This is a particularly busy time of year in our office, which can lead to longer wait times for in-person transactions,” said Polk County Treasurer Mary Wells. “We highly encourage Polk County residents to make their property tax payments online, by mail, or by drop box to avoid the wait, especially as we approach the payment deadline.”

All payments made by mail must be postmarked by September 30, 2022 to avoid late penalty.


Ways to Pay


Pay property taxes online at Payment options include e-check, debit card, or credit card. A nonrefundable service delivery fee applies to all forms of payment for online transactions. The fee for paying by e-check is $0.30, which is less than the cost of a postage stamp!

By Mail:

Property tax payments must be accompanied by a payment stub and postmarked by the United States Postal Service by September 30, 2022 to avoid late penalty.

By Drop Box:

A payment stub must accompany payments and can be dropped in the drop box marked “Polk County Treasurer” outside the main entrance of the Polk County Administration building. No cash payments should be left in the drop box!

By Phone:

Property taxes can be paid over the phone by e-check or credit/debit card, by calling our property tax line at 515.286.3060 during business hours. Customers may experience increased hold times due to high call volume. A non-refundable service fee applies to all e-check, credit, and debit card payments.

In Person:

Payments can be made in person at the Polk County Administration building located at 111 Court Ave. in Des Moines Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. (9 a.m.-5 p.m. on the 3rd Thursday of the month). Visit our website at to schedule an appointment or view walk-in wait times before visiting.
