How to Safely Store Firearms

• Keep guns unloaded and locked.
• To properly store and lock guns, use a gun safe, gun lock box, trigger lock, etc.
• Store and lock ammunition in a separate place.
• If your gun lock/storage has a key or combination code, keep them hidden or in a safe place that children or unauthorized users cannot access.
• When a gun is not being stored, it should be on your person and in your immediate control at all times.

Additional Tips

• If a visitor has a gun in a backpack, briefcase, handbag or an unlocked car, provide them with a locked place to hold it while they are in your home.
• Do not leave guns on a nightstand, table or other place where a child can gain access, as this can lead to injuries and fatalities.
• Remove firearms from your home if you have a family member, friend or frequent visitor who is living with depression or having suicidal thoughts.
• Ask your family members and friends to store their firearms safely.
