Johnston, IOWA (September 15, 2022) – A major artery between the cities of Johnston and Des Moines is once again flowing with cyclists and walkers. After more than three years the Trestle to Trestle Trail bridge is open for recreation.

The bridge has been under construction since February 2022. However, the trail section has been closed since spring 2019 when the previous bridge dramatically collapsed under the weight of ice jams and high water.

Construction of the new $2 million bridge – dubbed Beaver Crossing – was made possible through the financial support of many organizations including Polk County Conservation, City of Johnston, City of Des Moines, Polk County Board of Supervisors, Metropolitan Planning Organization and the State of Iowa. These collaborations are vital to maintain and build excellent quality of life for Polk County residents!

At a grand opening celebration today, community leaders gathered to share their excitement and support for the project. Many cyclists and walkers were also on-hand to take an inaugural trip across Beaver Crossing.
