Crisis response canine teams are a growing piece of the Critical Incident Stress Management community, and can be very effective in interacting with people experiencing intense emotions. Battalion Chief Justin Smith of the Knoxville, IA fire department, along with his wife Rebecca have founded the non-profit Crisis Canines of the Midlands, and are not only helping to respond with their canines in Central Iowa, but to grow the number of departments with their own canine members.
