Weatherization Assistance Program
The Housing Services Section operates a Weatherization Assistance Program that provides services to homeowners and renters residing in Polk County (includes all cities within Polk County) to assist with reducing energy usage and energy bills. The Weatherization Assistance Program takes an in-depth look into the several health/safety items, air infiltration, insulation value, mechanical system and appliance performance, along with lighting and water saving measures at your home.
This program is administered in Polk County on behalf of the State of Iowa Weatherization Assistance Program. https://humanrights.iowa.gov/dcaa/Weatherization
Priority is determined by a state matrix that includes fuel usage and household data.
These services are free of charge to clients and eligibility is based upon household income. (clients must be at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level or approved for the LIHEAP program.) To qualify for the LIHEAP program, please use the 175% column on the chart.
In West Des Moines: Applications may be made by contacting West Des Moines Human Services https://www.wdm.iowa.gov/government/human-services/programs-services/energy-assistance-weatherization or by calling (515)222-3660.
All other areas within Polk County: Applications may be made at any IMPACT Resource Center or by calling (515)274-1334.
If you qualify for assistance and the program is at your priority, Housing Services staff will contact you to schedule a time to meet you at your home to perform the initial evaluation. Polk County will then hire a qualified contractor to perform the work on your home. Finally, staff will inspect the work completed to ensure it meets quality control standards.
