New Legislation Expands Eligibility on Basis of Household Income for Those Aged 70 and Older

February 2, 2022

(Des Moines, IA)- The Polk County Treasurer’s Office is now accepting applications for the Elderly and Disabled Tax Credit through September 30.

Due to a recent legislative change by the Iowa Legislature, eligibility for the Elderly Property Tax Credit was expanded on the basis of household income for those over 70 years old. Under the new rules, those who were previously unable to claim the credit due to having too high of an income may now qualify for the credit on next year’s tax bill and in subsequent years.

Those aged 70 and older must continue to file for the credit each year to receive the maximum benefit of the new tax credit calculation.

“The Iowa Department of Revenue's expansion of the eligibility requirements for the Elderly Property Tax Credit will allow some of our most vulnerable citizens to qualify for property tax relief where they previously could not”, said Polk County Treasurer Mary Wells. “We encourage all those who meet the requirements to submit their applications before the September 30 deadline”.

Eligible Polk County Citizens should submit their completed applications to the Polk County Treasurer’s Office. Applications submitted this year will be applied to next year’s tax bill.
